Hyundai History

Hyundai Car Quiz

In 1947, Chung Ju-yung founded the Hyundai Group, first as "Hyundai Engineering & Construction", which included building roads. Chung played an important role in rebuilding Korea. About 20 years later, in 1968, the Hyundai Motor Group was founded and the Ulsan assembly plant was completed. Following the completion of the assembly plant, the first Hyundai vehicle was successfully assembled in cooperation with Ford Motor Company, the Cortina.

Years after the success of the Cortina, Hyundai decided to develop its own car. The Hyundai Pony was launched in 1975. The Pony was first a rear-wheel drive 4-door sedan, then added a pickup version in 1976, a station wagon in 1977, and a 3-door hatchback in 1980. Fun fact: The Hyundai Pony was inspiration for the now all-electric IONIQ 5. The first generation of the Hyundai Sonata was introduced in 1985. One of Hyundai's best sellers today.

Hyundai makes its way to the United States

In 1986, Hyundai opened Hyundai Motor America, which was headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. The Hyundai Excel was the first Hyundai vehicle sold in the United States. The Excel became more and more popular every year. This vehicle was made for customers on a budget and/or first-time buyers. By 1990, Hyundai in the United States offered more Hyundai models, and has continued to grow ever since.

Hyundai Motor America is now headquartered in Fountain Valley, California. Through Hyundai Motor America, Hyundai vehicles are distributed, sold, and serviced through more than 820 dealerships nationwide, including Napleton's Valley Hyundai!
